THE GRAND CEREMONY
TO HARMONIZE THE TEMPLE, ITS PRECINCTS,
THE VILLAGE, AS WELL AS THE UNIVERSE

The Mupuk Pedagingan and Pedudusan Agung ceremony is meant to revitalize the temple, making it fit to receive the Supreme God, Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, in his personification as the Destroyer who destroys all things in order to recreate them again.

The significance of this special ceremony is to harmonize the three worlds of Balinese Hindu belief. These worlds are:

1. Bhur – Level of the lower beings
2. Bwah – Level of the humans
3. Swah – Level of the Gods

Although it is the village community of Desa Pakraman Padangtegal which cares for and worships at the Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, the ceremonies are open to all who wish to attend and who are prepared to follow the rules of dress and behavior set down by tradition (adat).

These ceremonies are of extreme importance and usually take place at least once a generation. Preparations began a year ahead with major renovation and refurbishment of the temple, all of which is financed by Desa Pakraman Padangtegal. The preparation of the offerings will begin three months ahead and involve four different hamlets: Padangtegal Kaja, Padangtegal Mekarsari, Padangtegal Kelod and Padang Kencana. These ceremonies are of great significance, not only for the people of the community involved, but for the whole world. The rituals involve adding symbols and offerings that will buried in the foundation of the temple, with the purpose of reviving and strengthening the spiritual energy emanating from the temple, and in the process harmonizing the entire universe.

This multi-faceted ceremony is being carried out to realign the world, which is currently out of balance; its axis is tilting, causing earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wars and chaos.

The way to achieve realignment is mentioned in an old lontar palm text called Brahmawidhisastra,which derives from ancient Hindu scriptures. In Bali, the term “ceremony” or yadnya, means “asking for water”, which in this case, will ensure fertility and prosperity. It is hoped that the rituals being carried out will redress the problems faced today, and restore the earth to its proper balance. Subsequently, humans will become more humane and caring about each other and their environment.

The ritual aspects of the ceremony begin on July 2, 2010, the date determined by the Pedanda(Brahmana high priest). On this day, all materials required for the special offerings prescribed by the Pedanda, the Nuasen, will be collected and purified. In the course of the following months, all these offerings will be prepared with great care. Part of the ritual includes a procession carrying the Bagia, which is an enormous mountain-like offering, symbolizing the entire universe and all of its contents. All of the objects, creatures, elements, and features of the universe are represented in this gigantic offering. It includes, among other things, fruits, roots, metals, coins, thread, and much more. During this temple ceremony, the Bagia will be buried in a very big hole, beneath the foundations of the temple. The procession and planting of the Bagia represents the belief that everything belongs to the universe, and that ultimately everything returns to it.

Although the care of this temple and performance of its traditional rituals are the responsibility of Desa Pakraman Padangtegal, the people of other communities in the area have also contributed and supported by giving their time and skills. It is a shared effort, and it is important that everything is carried out correctly.

The ceremony is, of, and for, the Gods.  It lasts for eleven days, focusing on appeasing the Gods of the lakes, mountains and sea, to whom sacrifices will be made. The animals sacrificed will be reincarnated ot a higher level existence, closer to Nirwana. The western concepts of life and death play no part in these ceremonies. Understanding a belief in the infinity and continuity of life through the process of reincarnation should alleviate some of the unease that westerners feel when confronted with such practices. Try to see things from a Balinese perspective, not from your own cultural point of view. This is a Balinese ceremony. Please judge and experience it accordingly.

The timetable which follows sets out the ceremonial program and performances related to it. Please note that certain rituals are not open to visitors, and these have been marked accordingly in the program. The performances that take place during rituals are known as wali and are sacred. They are not intended as entertainment for spectators but are solemn rituals for Gods. However, there are many other performances related to the ceremony, these are known as balih-balihan and are high quality entertainment for all to enjoy.

ACTIVITIES OF INTEREST
July 2, 2010 :

10.00 onwards

Nuasen: All the materials required for the special offerings prescribed by the Pedanda will be collected and purified.
July 26, 2010 :

10.00 onwards

Mlaspas Pedagingan: All locations and apparatus associated with this ceremony will be ritually purified. A wayang (puppet) and a sacred masked dance (topeng) will be conducted to sanctify this ritual.
July 30, 2010 :

10.00 onwards

Nanceb Penjor: Each family in the village will place a penjor (curving bamboo pole) in front of their house to thank the Gods for plentiful crops and to welcome the Supreme Being down to earth.
July 31, 2010 :

10.00 onwards

Nedunang Ida Bhatara: All of the holy symbols will be taken from the main temples of the village and placed in Pura Dalem Agung so that they can be part of the ceremony.
August 1, 2010 :

07.00 onwards

Melasti: The symbols of the Gods will be carried in procession accompanied by gambelan to the beach near Sukawati where two Pedanda will preside over the ceremony to purify the symbols and to propitiate the spirits of the sea (the nether world).
August 2, 2010 :

14.00 onwards

Mendak Bagia : A ceremony to purify the symbols of the wealth of the universe.
August 5, 2010 :

09.00 onwards

Tawur Agung/Pedanaan: Sacrificial ceremonies will be performed to appease the Gods of the lakes and mountains and restore the balance of the world. Followed by a grand ceremony for the temple and village, for all forms and the elements, to ensure an atmosphere of harmony for the community and the universe. Sacred performances of topeng (mask), pendet, rejang and baris jago (sacred ritual dances) will be performed.
August 8, 2010 :

10.00 onwards

Mapepada Agung : A procession of animals will be led around the temple and after having been sacrificed, their flesh will be returned to the temple to be offered to the Gods to enable them to return to this world on a higher level.
August 9, 2010 :

10.00 onwards

Puncak Karya : The opening ceremony to harmonize the temple and its precincts in a communal prayer attended by all the members of the temple community. Seven Pedanda will officiate. The ritual is accompanied by sacred performances of topeng (mask), wayang (puppet), pendet, rejang and baris jago.The Gambuh, a theatrical dance reserved specially for this ceremony also will be performed.
August 10 – 18,

2010 :

16.00 onwards

Nganyarin : Days of general worship when most of the temple members will come to the temple every evening to worship and members of neighboring temples and associated temples further away will come to pay their respect to the Gods. Outsiders wishing to join in these sessions are welcome to do so as long as they wear proper full adat clothes and behave in a respectful manner.
August 19, 2010 :

16.00 onwards

Mendem Bagia : The symbol of all the contents of the universe will be buried under the foundations of the temple.
August 20, 2010 :

09.00 onwards

Nyineb : The last day of the ceremonies for the temple community to give thanks to the Gods for their attendance and send them off respectfully to their homes.

Karauhan, Sira Sané Rauh?

Redité sané mangkin (17/12) ring Pura Pangrebongan, Kesiman, Dénpasar Timur, kawéntenang upacara Ngrébong. Upacara puniki kasub duaning akéh pisan kramané sané karauhan, ngurek ri tatkala ngiring sesuunan Barong lan Rangda ngiter wantilan. Ring suang-suang Barong lan Rangda wénten kirang langkung dasa diri pepatih sané ngaturang ayah ngurek.

Wilangan punika nénten ja pasti, duaning ri tatkala sesuunan Barong lan Rangda ngiter wantilan setata wénten malih krama pangempon sané karauhan.

Yéning becikang nyingak, ring Ngrébong punika pamargi karauhané wénten tigang palet. Asiki, magenah ring jaba purané, sang sané karauhan mabayu ageng, sakadi anak ngamuk nuek tangkah ragané.

Sané kakalih, ring madia mandala purané, sang sané karauhan nénten ja ngambel keris, nénten ja ngurek, nanging masolah. Sané karauhan majalaran solah lan tangis punika nénten lianan wantah para pemangku.

Sané kaping untat, ring utama mandala purané, wantah karauhan sané pinih alus. Sang  sané karauhan wantah para pamangku lingsir sané malinggih ring Baléné. Karauhané wantah abos-bos. Duk punika, sang sané karauhan pacang makenyem kémanten.

“Kerauhan punika malian-lianan santukan sang sané karauhan madué tingkat pengendalian diri sané nénten pateh,” pajar Prof. Dr. LK Suryani, psikiater sané dahat wikan indik karauhan.

“Yéning sang sané karauhan madué tingkat pengendalian diri sané tinggi sinah prasida ngametuang karauhan sané alus punika. Yéning tingkat pengendalian diriné rendah sinah sané metu punika karauhan sané kasar, sané jerat-jerit,” baosnyané.

Punika mawinan sapasira ja sané sering karauhan sapatutnyané malajahin tata cara tur sarana anggén neguhang pengendalian diri.

“Murid-murid titiangé sampun ajahin titiang tata cara mangda prasida karauhan utawi trance sané alus. Ri tatkala karauhan alus punika, sang sané karauhan nénten ja pacang lali tekéning ragané. Sané karauhan tetep prasida uning ring napi sané kabaosang olih Ida sané nedunin,” pajar LK Suryani.

Mangda prasida ngametuang karauhan sané alus, LK Suryani mabarang, sané pacang karauhan sapatutné nénten gagéson ngaturin Ida Sesuunan utawi Sanghyang Embang tedun ka ragané.

“Yéning cacirén utawi cihna karauhan sampun karasayang ring ragané, gelisang ngamargiang pranayama tur ngeningang kayun. Aturin Ida Sesuunan mangda sampunang tedun dumun. Yéning kayuné sampun ening, i rika wau aturin Ida tedun, I rika wau sukserahang ragané, sinah karauhané pacang alus tur mapikenoh,” baosnyané.

Indik cacirén utawi cihna karauhan punika I Madé Tuardi, tapakan ring Pura Banjar Ceramcam lan Pura Blanjong, maosang, “Sakadi toya ngléncok, anggané ngejer keras pisan tur marasa panes.”

Yadiastun yusané kantun anom, tapakan Ratu Madé Sakti puniki sampun pitulas warsa dados tapakan Ida Sesuunan.

Prof. Dr. LK Suryani taler matuéling ring krama Baliné indik jenis karauhan sané wénten kalih palet. Sané kapertama wantah karauhan sangkaning katedunin olih Ida Sesuunan, Sanghyang Embang utawi leluhur. Sané kakalih wantah karauhan sangkaning keni panyungkan, sakadi bebainan utawi penyakit jiwa lianan.

“Wénten malih karauhan sangkaning Buta Kala sané ngranjing ka anggané. Puniki sané kabaos kasusupan,” pajar IGN Sudiana, dosén ring Sekolah Tinggi Agama Hindu (STAH) Dénpasar.

Lianan ring punika, wénten taler sané mapi-mapi karauhan. Makudang warsa sané lintang, ring Gianyar, wénten sané mapi-mapi karauhan mangda polih jabatan ring koperasi désa tur mangda prasida ngasorang mesehné ring désa.

Punika mawinan krama Baliné sapatutnyané ngyatnain karauhan punika.

“Dados percaya ring kawéntenan karauhan, sakéwanten sampunang kalintang percaya ring daging bebaosané,” pajar IGN Sudiana.(ita/iwa/jun)
