The Mupuk Pedagingan and Pedudusan Agung ceremony is meant to revitalize the temple, making it fit to receive the Supreme God, Ida Sang Hyang Widhi Wasa, in his personification as the Destroyer who destroys all things in order to recreate them again.

The significance of this special ceremony is to harmonize the three worlds of Balinese Hindu belief. These worlds are:

1. Bhur – Level of the lower beings
2. Bwah – Level of the humans
3. Swah – Level of the Gods

Although it is the village community of Desa Pakraman Padangtegal which cares for and worships at the Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, the ceremonies are open to all who wish to attend and who are prepared to follow the rules of dress and behavior set down by tradition (adat).

These ceremonies are of extreme importance and usually take place at least once a generation. Preparations began a year ahead with major renovation and refurbishment of the temple, all of which is financed by Desa Pakraman Padangtegal. The preparation of the offerings will begin three months ahead and involve four different hamlets: Padangtegal Kaja, Padangtegal Mekarsari, Padangtegal Kelod and Padang Kencana. These ceremonies are of great significance, not only for the people of the community involved, but for the whole world. The rituals involve adding symbols and offerings that will buried in the foundation of the temple, with the purpose of reviving and strengthening the spiritual energy emanating from the temple, and in the process harmonizing the entire universe.

This multi-faceted ceremony is being carried out to realign the world, which is currently out of balance; its axis is tilting, causing earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, wars and chaos.

The way to achieve realignment is mentioned in an old lontar palm text called Brahmawidhisastra,which derives from ancient Hindu scriptures. In Bali, the term “ceremony” or yadnya, means “asking for water”, which in this case, will ensure fertility and prosperity. It is hoped that the rituals being carried out will redress the problems faced today, and restore the earth to its proper balance. Subsequently, humans will become more humane and caring about each other and their environment.

The ritual aspects of the ceremony begin on July 2, 2010, the date determined by the Pedanda(Brahmana high priest). On this day, all materials required for the special offerings prescribed by the Pedanda, the Nuasen, will be collected and purified. In the course of the following months, all these offerings will be prepared with great care. Part of the ritual includes a procession carrying the Bagia, which is an enormous mountain-like offering, symbolizing the entire universe and all of its contents. All of the objects, creatures, elements, and features of the universe are represented in this gigantic offering. It includes, among other things, fruits, roots, metals, coins, thread, and much more. During this temple ceremony, the Bagia will be buried in a very big hole, beneath the foundations of the temple. The procession and planting of the Bagia represents the belief that everything belongs to the universe, and that ultimately everything returns to it.

Although the care of this temple and performance of its traditional rituals are the responsibility of Desa Pakraman Padangtegal, the people of other communities in the area have also contributed and supported by giving their time and skills. It is a shared effort, and it is important that everything is carried out correctly.

The ceremony is, of, and for, the Gods.  It lasts for eleven days, focusing on appeasing the Gods of the lakes, mountains and sea, to whom sacrifices will be made. The animals sacrificed will be reincarnated ot a higher level existence, closer to Nirwana. The western concepts of life and death play no part in these ceremonies. Understanding a belief in the infinity and continuity of life through the process of reincarnation should alleviate some of the unease that westerners feel when confronted with such practices. Try to see things from a Balinese perspective, not from your own cultural point of view. This is a Balinese ceremony. Please judge and experience it accordingly.

The timetable which follows sets out the ceremonial program and performances related to it. Please note that certain rituals are not open to visitors, and these have been marked accordingly in the program. The performances that take place during rituals are known as wali and are sacred. They are not intended as entertainment for spectators but are solemn rituals for Gods. However, there are many other performances related to the ceremony, these are known as balih-balihan and are high quality entertainment for all to enjoy.

Redité sané mangkin (17/12) ring Pura Pangrebongan, Kesiman, Dénpasar Timur, kawéntenang upacara Ngrébong. Upacara puniki kasub duaning akéh pisan kramané sané karauhan, ngurek ri tatkala ngiring sesuunan Barong lan Rangda ngiter wantilan. Ring suang-suang Barong lan Rangda wénten kirang langkung dasa diri pepatih sané ngaturang ayah ngurek.

Wilangan punika nénten ja pasti, duaning ri tatkala sesuunan Barong lan Rangda ngiter wantilan setata wénten malih krama pangempon sané karauhan.

Yéning becikang nyingak, ring Ngrébong punika pamargi karauhané wénten tigang palet. Asiki, magenah ring jaba purané, sang sané karauhan mabayu ageng, sakadi anak ngamuk nuek tangkah ragané.

Sané kakalih, ring madia mandala purané, sang sané karauhan nénten ja ngambel keris, nénten ja ngurek, nanging masolah. Sané karauhan majalaran solah lan tangis punika nénten lianan wantah para pemangku.

Sané kaping untat, ring utama mandala purané, wantah karauhan sané pinih alus. Sang  sané karauhan wantah para pamangku lingsir sané malinggih ring Baléné. Karauhané wantah abos-bos. Duk punika, sang sané karauhan pacang makenyem kémanten.

“Kerauhan punika malian-lianan santukan sang sané karauhan madué tingkat pengendalian diri sané nénten pateh,” pajar Prof. Dr. LK Suryani, psikiater sané dahat wikan indik karauhan.

“Yéning sang sané karauhan madué tingkat pengendalian diri sané tinggi sinah prasida ngametuang karauhan sané alus punika. Yéning tingkat pengendalian diriné rendah sinah sané metu punika karauhan sané kasar, sané jerat-jerit,” baosnyané.

Punika mawinan sapasira ja sané sering karauhan sapatutnyané malajahin tata cara tur sarana anggén neguhang pengendalian diri.

“Murid-murid titiangé sampun ajahin titiang tata cara mangda prasida karauhan utawi trance sané alus. Ri tatkala karauhan alus punika, sang sané karauhan nénten ja pacang lali tekéning ragané. Sané karauhan tetep prasida uning ring napi sané kabaosang olih Ida sané nedunin,” pajar LK Suryani.

Mangda prasida ngametuang karauhan sané alus, LK Suryani mabarang, sané pacang karauhan sapatutné nénten gagéson ngaturin Ida Sesuunan utawi Sanghyang Embang tedun ka ragané.

“Yéning cacirén utawi cihna karauhan sampun karasayang ring ragané, gelisang ngamargiang pranayama tur ngeningang kayun. Aturin Ida Sesuunan mangda sampunang tedun dumun. Yéning kayuné sampun ening, i rika wau aturin Ida tedun, I rika wau sukserahang ragané, sinah karauhané pacang alus tur mapikenoh,” baosnyané.

Indik cacirén utawi cihna karauhan punika I Madé Tuardi, tapakan ring Pura Banjar Ceramcam lan Pura Blanjong, maosang, “Sakadi toya ngléncok, anggané ngejer keras pisan tur marasa panes.”

Yadiastun yusané kantun anom, tapakan Ratu Madé Sakti puniki sampun pitulas warsa dados tapakan Ida Sesuunan.

Prof. Dr. LK Suryani taler matuéling ring krama Baliné indik jenis karauhan sané wénten kalih palet. Sané kapertama wantah karauhan sangkaning katedunin olih Ida Sesuunan, Sanghyang Embang utawi leluhur. Sané kakalih wantah karauhan sangkaning keni panyungkan, sakadi bebainan utawi penyakit jiwa lianan.

“Wénten malih karauhan sangkaning Buta Kala sané ngranjing ka anggané. Puniki sané kabaos kasusupan,” pajar IGN Sudiana, dosén ring Sekolah Tinggi Agama Hindu (STAH) Dénpasar.

Lianan ring punika, wénten taler sané mapi-mapi karauhan. Makudang warsa sané lintang, ring Gianyar, wénten sané mapi-mapi karauhan mangda polih jabatan ring koperasi désa tur mangda prasida ngasorang mesehné ring désa.

Punika mawinan krama Baliné sapatutnyané ngyatnain karauhan punika.

“Dados percaya ring kawéntenan karauhan, sakéwanten sampunang kalintang percaya ring daging bebaosané,” pajar IGN Sudiana.(ita/iwa/jun)

Hari Raya Saraswati adalah hari untuk memperingati turunnya Ilmu Pengetahuan.

Umat Hindu di Bali merayakan dengan melakukan persembahyangan di Pura, Sekolah, Perkantoran, dsb.

Hari Raya Saraswati umat Hindu melakukan persembahyangan kepada Dewi Saraswati yang dikenal sebagai “Dewi Ilmu Pengetahuan”.

Dewi Saraswati merupakan Shakti dari Dewa Brahma.

1. Have deep faith.
2. Full and complete devotion to God (Bhakti).
3. Love without limits, in the way that a husband loves his wife, a wife loves her husband, or a mother loves her son.
4. Steady attachment to God ? don?t lose time unnecessarily.
5. Constant devotion to Guru. Keep in mind that the Guru is not a human being, although He has human form. He is God. If this is understood, you will be able to see God through the Guru.
6. Don?t be small-minded. Think, “I want to get the One and Only God. I must get Him, I must see Him.” Always keep those feeling with you.
7. Keep satsang, pursue the company of satsanghis (”follow” those who do satsang). Do dhyan (meditation), think about the Self, and know that Self. Then you can feel the presence of God.
8. Practice sankirtan ? the singing of devotional songs. Read holy books, scripture. If you cannot do it aloud, then do it silently. Those things help to bring God?s presence.
9. Glorify God and His persons, to bring strength to your mind, and to keep your thoughts from scattering (”keep your mind together”).
10. Don?t see the faults of others. If you see others? faults, you may become ensnared without your knowledge.
11. When dong meditation, repeat the mantra given by Guru, and think about Guru?s form.
12. Once a week, get together with Gurubais and devotees and do kirtan, talk about God, and do meditation.
13. If you do not love your parents, then you cannot love God.
14. Flowers, bel leaves, fruit, incense, japa ? those are traditional items for worship, but in addition to these external things, you must establish God in your heart.
15. Leave your pride and serve the poor, the helpless, the suffering, and feel that they are all God.
16. Take care of your family responsibilities, but whatever you do, keep God in your mind and believe that this universe is His.
17. If you have spiritual feelings, experiences, or perceptions, do not speak of it to anyone except Guru.
18. The way to surrender and take shelter in the Guru is by surrendering the mind, intelligence, and pride to Him. Then the devotee can get relief from sorrow. But you have to keep trying, and have patience and perseverance.
19. Every night, right before you lie down, evaluate your actions ? what you have done, good or bad, during the course of the day.
20. Cry to the Divine Mother (Mahamaya), and pray for forgiveness of the sins and ignorance of your mind.
21. Remember that with love, anything can be achieved.
22. Remember that God alone is real, everything else is unreal.
23. Do not overeat, and eat a balanced diet. You decide what you will eat. But foods that are too hot, bitter, spicy, cold, or stale, do not touch.
24. On Ekadasi (eleventh day of the full moon, and eleventh day of the new moon), take less food and don?t work so hard.
25. You can do meditation in your mind at all times, but the best times are the two junctures: dawn and dusk.
26. If you do meditation and prayer with sincerity of heart, then you will be able to keep your mind from falling into evil or filth.
27. When doing meditation, it is best to breathe slowly and deeply. You can repeat prayers as often as you breathe in and out.
28. You can leave everything for God, but you cannot leave Him for anything.
29. Whether a householder or a sadhu, you should strive to live a celibate life. If you don?t live a celibate life, then your shakti and mental happiness will wane. Without celibacy, spiritual perceptions will not come.
30. If you always think about the moment of death, then you will develop an indifference to the sensual, worldly life.
31. Too many years slip away before you realize the nature of desire, that it is an illusion. But if you get Guru?s grace, you can let go of desire.
32. The shape and form conceal the formless. To understand and to get the formless, you need to recognize and focus your mind on the Divine form.
33. Even to pretend to be devoted is good, but it doesn?t mean that through this pretension, you should bring others to ruin. After a length of time, feigning devotion may make you devout.
34. Human beings are above all other living creatures. Because they are above all others, only human beings can perceive God.
35. Before you undertake any work, you should weigh it in terms of karma ? good or bad.
36. If you cannot obey rules, then you cannot rise above rules.
37. Nervous debility is a physical disorder. The proper medicine for this condition is provided by retention of mental coolness, keeping company of good people, by the study of the lives and activities of great men, and by renunciation of the company of evil and feeble souls.
38. Never place considerations of the body above the health of the mind.
39. Other than your own wife, think of every woman as your mother.
40. When you worship, begin with meditation, which will lead to Bhava (ecstatic love). Then, after Bhav, MahaBhav. In the state of MahaBhav, there is nothing else.
41. KulaKundalini Shakti (the active power of the universe) is sleeping within you. That is why you need to practice devotion, to awaken this force within you.
42. Who is a Hindu? (”Hindu ke?”). A Hindu is that person who does not have any hatred for others, and can love all beings deeply.

Answers, Through Discourses with Devotees, from the Divine Gurudev

1. Devotee: Who is God?

Guru: “I am the bull, I am the butcher, I am the one who eats the bull.” God is love.

2. Devotee: Who is the greater of the two: mother or father?

Guru: Mother gives us birth. After we take birth, we see our mother first. Mother raises us with love and care. Mother helps us to know the father, and also other members of the family. In childhood, we know that mother is the closest to us in our lives. Exactly in this way, it is our duty to worship the Universal Mother. Without any hesitation, you surrender to your Mother. Then that Universal Mother will reveal to us the Universal Father. Now, you judge who is greater.

3. Devotee: My only wish is that you grant me initiation.

Guru: You begin by repeating 1, 5, 00, 1. On this number, you do japa. One means God, Ishwar. Five, the five elements (earth, fire, water, air, ether). Zero, Zero, the two nostrils. These two nostrils ? if we can stop our breath with the aide of yoga, we can go back to the original “One” from which we came. When we come to that One, it is such a sublime feeling that it cannot be expressed in words.

4. Devotee: If you would grant me initiation as your chela (son), I would consider my birth as a human being to be successful.

Guru: That which did not exist, exists, then will no longer exist (”Cheelo na, ache, tagbe na”). Always ponder and chant these three things.

5. Devotee: Thakur, I cannot understand these words.

Guru: Don?t worry, you will be able to understand it at the right time.

6. Devotee: Can I pray to God for worldly wealth?

Guru: Yes, if you use that wealth for a noble cause. Nothing pi, single mind one! (”I haven?t a pice or a penny, my mind has a single focus on the One!”)

7. Devotee: All day and night, I am so busy with my own duties that I have no time to chant or pray.

Guru: We get time to do everything, but we don?t get time to worship God. In that situation, if you have no time at all, then do it when you are in the bathroom.

8. Devotee: Baba, I have come to know that there will be a water well (tube well) at the ashram. If you give me permission, I want to give money towards this.

Guru: Many others want to give money for the well, just like you do. But if I take money from only one person, then that person will be proud. So I will accept money out of charitable funds put together from a large number of people. God gives when you ask, and gives even when you don?t ask. If it is necessary, He will bring it to the person, even carrying it on His head.

9. Guru [to an American devotee]: You bear good signs. Do you practice celibacy?

American Devotee: I don?t have a girlfriend.

10. Guru: Whether or not you have a girlfriend is not what I want to know. Do you observe brahmacharya (celibacy)?

American Devotee: No. What sort of rules should I follow?

Guru: Not that many. Trust in God and practice celibacy with respect. If you respect this celibacy, Ma Ananda Mayi (the Mother Who Grants Spiritual Bliss) will give you what you need. Purity is the inner meaning of Dharma. Until you practice celibacy, you cannot get purity in your mind. Being virtuous towards your fellow man, helping one another ? if you do those things, joy will accompany you wherever you are. If you don?t observe celibacy with respect, then what I said before about purity will not make any sense.

11. Devotee: Why am I unable to have complete faith in You?

Guru: It is very difficult to place complete faith in the Spiritual Preceptor. A Spiritual Preceptor has in common with others His food and sleeping habits. A disciple should be simple-hearted and pure in mind to understand his Preceptor even marginally or fractionally. To have complete faith in the Preceptor is tantamount to seeing the Preceptor revealing God to the disciple.

Guru?s Grace is the Main Thing

   6. Physical exercise – keinginan untuk melakukan aktivitas fisik

   7. Order – keinginan banyak berorganisasi dalam kehidupan sehari-hari

   8. Independence – keinginan untuk membuat keputusan sendiri

   9. Vengeance – keinginan membalas dendam ketika disakiti hatinya

  10. Social contact – keinginan berada dalam satu kelompok dengan yang lainnya

  11. Family – keinginan menghabiskan waktu bersama keluarganya sendiri

  12. Social prestige – keinginan mendapatkan gengsi dan perhatian

  13. Aversive sensations – tidak ingin merasa sakit dan gelisah

  14. Citizenship – keinginan menjadi pelayan publik dan mewujudkan keadilan sosial

  15. Power – keinginan mempengaruhi orang lain.
